Test Yamaha TMax 530 vs 500: All of our measurements

Yamaha TMax 500 2011 against T-MAX 530 2012: This is the first maxi scooter shock in 2012! We have timed, weighed, past the power bench and checked their power consumption. All you need to know about the new TMax 2012 is here in the first game before the fratricidal duel expected against a BMW 600 Sport C ...

Sole master in his kingdom - or almost, if one takes into account the unusual Gilera GP 800 - Yamaha TMax 500 is full house for ten years in sales in Europe, in markets including Italian and French (32.000 hexagonal sales since 2001). Best-selling undisputed segment that he himself initiated, one imagines, however, that "King Max" should be more difficult to reign in 2012 with the arrival of spring a serious competitor: the BMW C-600 Sport .

For version 4.0 of the TMax, Yamaha announces full of aesthetic and technical developments. This will he adequate for the Bavarian Max? Hard to say as is. However, we can develop a very strong balance sheet dynamic, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and validate its potential for all before the big confrontation. To gauge the evolution of the 530 - and likely to remain Number One - we have opposed the (already obsolete?) TMax 500, for a comparative formal, timer, GPS, precision balance, bench power ... calculator and the support! It will not be said that Scooter-Station with kids sports and action!

The TMax 500 takes a serious blow to be outdated!

At first glance, it is clear that, faced with 530, the Yamaha TMax 500 takes a serious blow to be outdated. The makeover is great effect: more angular, the new 2012 Yamaha TMax is akin to sports complex R1 and R6, especially at the rear. It is still installed on the scooter, ergonomics remain constant ultimately very little. However, the protection of the 2012 T Max gets better: at high speed through an opening at the base of the windshield, the driver feels much less aerodynamic eddies, very present on the old TMax 500. Moreover, the placement of new mirrors improve side protection. However, as arranged, these accessories can be found at the same height as the rear-view mirrors of cars. Those who practice the rise of file not welcome in town, especially since the replacement of these mirrors is now more complex.
The design of the new dashboard is a matter of taste. Some bemoan its lack of elegance, but with the tachometer needle and backlight red, we must recognize it gains in clarity. It also provides more information.

Performance TMax 500 vs 530: A "gap" in perspective

Before you even get out the stopwatch, a first start in order to fire allows us to appreciate the benefits of technical developments made to the new Yamaha TMax 530. Greenlight: the 530, more ready to take off, immediately takes several steps ahead. Once launched, the gap stabilizes but does not freeze: inexorably, the TMax 530 continues to glean some TMax 500 meters. Highway, we test again at 90 and 110 km / h: again, the 530 responding strongly. More vigorously and also because the handlebars, the engine gives the 530 clearly feel more fulfilled at low revs. The twin optimized thus offers more pleasure, especially as the vibrations are better filtered.
This feeling is confirmed on the clock (to be read in "The measures Scooter-Station"). Whether at 100m standing start, or on occasions made on "neutral ground" - between 50 and 90 km / h and from 90 to 130 km / h - the Yamaha TMax 530 is still before the Yamaha TMax 500. It sticks almost 1 second in the 100m DA and - above all - a second and a half recovery, regardless of the regime. But to be perfectly objective, we must mention the difference in mileage between the two Yamaha TMax loan from France. With over 1100 km on the clock, the TMax 530 was well oiled, which was not really the case in our day TMax 500. Fresh out of the box, it totaled only 2 km at the beginning of this test, and a few hundred at the time of the measurements. A kilometer equals, we imagine the difference a little less important, but still quite present. In a previous comparative exhaust for Yamaha TMax 500 (read here), we in fact already passed the maxi scooter (perfectly honed this time) to the dynamometer. The results then we can say today that the differences between TMax 500 TMax 500 a run-in and non-functioning is low.

More feelings ... the limit

With increasing displacement, changes in mechanical work on the transmission (transmission and final drive), the 530 is more intense than the 500. Still manageable, we find this new TMax a bit more nimble also, thanks to her weight loss. Fully fueled, it loses much 3.8 kg on the scales Scooter-Station. In dynamic behavior is not transcended, the Yamaha TMax 500 already enjoying a perfect ride and rigor of the angle.
In terms of extension, the TMax 530 is slightly above: 170 km / h in GPS, against 163 km / h on TMax 500. Side of the coin, the new T-Max 2012 appears a priori more greedy. In our comparison - during which we drove into town on national highway - we found an average consumption of 0.5 l/100 km higher for the 530.

Lovers of revolution will have to wait

Returning from this first comparison between the exclusive Yamaha TMax TMax 530 2012 500 2011 and we have no doubt! Aesthetically more aggressive and dynamically more powerful than its predecessor, the new Yamaha TMax 530 arises in the new reference maxi scooter ... Sport version! With the new dashboard and adjustable windshield, he is also more pleasant. In addition, this vintage 2012's "King TMax" still wants comfort in everyday use, and cut to provide more steering feel. Despite Yamaha Tracker (to find the scooter in case of theft) series, we find the rate increase is not justified: the T-Max goes from € 9999 to € 10 490 in the version without ABS.
But the question "Is it necessary to move to 530," we answer still yes. The TMax is the best Maxiscooter sporting moment, on a segment invented and outrageously previously monopolized by Yamaha. Who would be totally committed to the Japanese brand and do not swear by the new look very elegant Maxiscooter the best-seller (a matter of taste), the TMax 530 is required. Proponents of change, they will have to wait a little longer. The BMW C-600 Sport, the novelty of the segment arriving next spring, as it would be wise to try it before making his choice. While it is announced heavier (249 kg in running order), the Bavarian Maxiscooter sports offer (on paper) a more powerful engine (60 hp), housed in a frame promised hyper sharp. Remains unknown: the prices charged by BMW ... But as the Chinese saying goes "those who wait, time opens."

The verdict of the engine test bench

Justice of the Peace, the Dynojet dyno our friend Olivier Ettouati association IFAIR (Insert - Training - Individualized Animation for Success), based in Evreux, spoke. Before going into details of the values obtained, we must first discuss a problem with the measurement of Yamaha TMax 530. Once placed on the engine test bench, the Maxiscooter will automatically down mode (LED lit injection) and the measurement becomes impossible to perform above 6000 rev / min. To address this concern, we contacted Yamaha France, which found itself unable to bring us a solution. The TMax 530 just arrived in the park, themselves have not yet gone to bed, do not yet suitcases techniques to disconnect some sensors attached to the transmission. However, our values set to 6000 rev / min are perfectly correct, the Maxiscooter operating at 100% of its potential so far. These initial curves we thus make a first basis for reflection, which should fill in the chart provided by Yamaha Japan.

Our measurements to the rear wheel - not to the crankshaft, unlike the manufacturer data - we get the real power of maxiscooters. That of TMax 530 (dark blue curve) is 34.41 ch. : Almost two more than the TMax 500 (dark green curve), measured at 32.58 hp. Document provided by Yamaha in support, we find that past 6000 r / min, power continues to rise until 6800 rev / min, collecting the equivalent of passing an extra horse. Despite the intervention of the variation (which causes some oscillations), the curve of the 530 offers more linear than the 500.
In terms of torque, the 530 makes a real difference in the low to midrange, giving the impression that it takes shorter. Indeed, the peak occurs much earlier on the 530 than the 500. We obtain a maximum torque of 4.08 daN.m for 530 (light blue curve), whereas it is 3.63 daN.m for TMax 500 (light green).
